A message from Simon Clark, director of Forest:

WE ARE so sorry to hear that David Hockney has died. The internationally-acclaimed artist was a guest at several Forest events, including a private dinner in 2004 (which is when we first met him), a drinks party in 2008, and a reception at the House of Commons in 2011.

My favorite memory, however, was the day he traveled to Brighton to speak at a fringe meeting organised by Forest at the 2005 Labour Party conference to protest against the proposed smoking ban. The event was chaired by Claire Fox, now Baroness Fox, and panelists included another friend of Forest, musician Joe Jackson.

The day began with David appearing on BBC Breakfast (where he waved a piece of paper that read ‘DEATH awaits you even if you do not smoke’) and the Today programme on Radio 4 (during which he famously accused a Labour minister of being “dreary” and “bossy”).

A few hours later he arrived in Brighton where we had organised a photo op, multiple interviews with several broadsheets and the Press Association, a TV interview with Andrew Neil, a fringe meeting full of laughter, and, finally, dinner at a Cuban-themed restaurant where we were joined by a journalist from the Sunday Times who had been sent in haste from London to interview the great man. It was, without doubt, the best day of my working life.

We were proud and immensely grateful that he supported our campaign against the smoking ban, which he described as ‘the most grotesque piece of social engineering’. He also declared that ‘pubs aren’t health clubs’ and believed that smoking was good for his mental health.

David Hockney lived life on his own terms, and what a fabulous and productive life that was. He will be greatly missed by everyone who values individual freedom.

WIR SIND so traurig zu hören, dass David Hockney gestorben ist. Der international gefeierte Künstler war Gast bei mehreren Forest-Veranstaltungen, darunter einem privaten Dinner 2004 (bei dem wir ihn zum ersten Mal trafen), einer Cocktailparty 2008 und einem Empfang im Britischen Unterhaus 2011.

Meine bevorzugte Erinnerung bleibt jedoch der Tag, an dem er nach Brighton reiste, um bei einer Fringe-Veranstaltung zu sprechen, die Forest 2005 auf der Labour-Parteikonferenz organisiert hatte, um gegen das geplante Rauchverbot zu protestieren. Die Veranstaltung wurde von Claire Fox, heute Baroness Fox, moderiert, und zu den Teilnehmern gehörte ein weiterer Freund von Forest, der Musiker Joe Jackson.

Der Tag begann damit, dass David in BBC Breakfast auftrat (wo er ein Stück Papier schwenkte, auf dem stand: „DER TOD erwartet dich, auch wenn du nicht rauchst“) und in der Sendung Today auf Radio 4 (bei der er einen Labour-Minister berühmt als „trist“ und „herrisch“ bezeichnete).

Ein paar Stunden später traf er in Brighton ein, wo wir ein Foto-Shooting, mehrere Interviews mit verschiedenen Tageszeitungen und der Press Association, ein TV-Interview mit Andrew Neil, eine von Gelächter erfüllte Fringe-Veranstaltung und schließlich ein Abendessen in einem kubanisch geprägten Restaurant organisiert hatten – zu dem sich auch ein Journalist der Sunday Times gesellte, der eilig aus London geschickt worden war, um den großen Mann zu interviewen. Es war ohne jeden Zweifel der beste Tag meines Arbeitslebens.

Wir waren stolz und zutiefst dankbar, dass er unsere Kampagne gegen das Rauchverbot unterstützte, das er als „the most grotesque piece of social engineering“ bezeichnete. Er erklärte auch, dass „Pubs keine Gesundheits-Clubs“ seien und war überzeugt, dass das Rauchen gut für seine geistige Gesundheit sei.

David Hockney lebte sein Leben nach seinen eigenen Regeln, und was für ein wunderbares und produktives Leben das war. Er wird von allen, die individuelle Freiheit schätzen, schmerzlich vermisst werden.
